colors
You may be overwhelmed by the number of paint colors available. The number seems to be growing every day! The good thing is that with just over half a dozen colors, you can create just about any color. A good selection of colors for beginning painters is as follows:
– Cadmium yellow medium
– Cadmium red medium
– Reddish-Brown
– Burnt sienna
– Phthalo green
– Phthalo blue
-Violet
– Titanium White
– Black Mars
Of course there are no limitations; this is just a sample of the colors you could use. Of course, you can add colors like purple, gray, and brown to the mix. The colors provided should provide a beginner with a perfectly good range of colors to use when painting.
Palette
A very useful type of palette that you can use is the disposable palette. It’s great for beginners because it’s cheap and once you use it once, you can throw it away. Alternatively, there are ‘stay wet’ palettes, which are specially designed to be durable. These stay-moist popsicles are also designed to be very lightweight and easy to transport.
Brush
Brushes come in all shapes and sizes. Most painters can use a single brush for their paintings. As a beginner, you may want to try out a few different shapes and sizes to see which one suits your needs best. Generally speaking, you should choose a thin brush if you are painting a painting that has a lot of detail, and a larger brush if you are painting a larger painting with less fine detail.
Support for
A support is the surface on which you apply the paint. Supports can be pretty much anything from glass and wood to cardboard and of course canvas. Beginning painters should try canvas for support. As with other painting supplies, there are many different types of canvas available. Buying a pre-prepared and primed canvas will save you the hassle of prepping and priming the canvas yourself.
other bits and bobs
In addition to the supplies listed above, it’s helpful to have a few other things to paint with. You’ll need things like kitchen paper, a paper town, or an old rag to help you clean up any messes afterwards. Have a pencil and eraser so you can do some light sketches to plan your painting. You’ll also need a jar or glass of water to dip your brushes in and some soap to clean them after you’re done painting.
