1. Talk about something hot. A general rule of thumb when writing news is to focus on something that is recent and newsworthy. So instead of talking about what happened last month or last week, focus on what’s happening today. Your readers will surely appreciate it if you keep them informed on the topics they need to know right now.
2. Do your research. It is very important that you deliver complete and detailed information to your readers, otherwise they will not fully understand your stories. Therefore, set aside more than enough time to fully learn and understand the stories you would like to cover. Go to the place where the event happened and talk to as many people as possible. Also, do your best to get all sides of the story.
3. Stick to the facts. I know, exaggerating or sensationalizing things can make your articles more engaging, but this is not the best way to go if you want to become a respected journalist. If you want people to admire you, make sure you only offer data.
4. Be brief. You need to keep your articles relatively short for 2 main reasons; to help their publishers save some space and better serve their time-pressed audience. Write your news articles using as few words as possible. If you think a piece of information isn’t that important, don’t bother including it in your content. Avoid the use of fillers at all costs and, of course, don’t beat around the bush. It’s just a big no-no in the field of journalism.
