Cakes are a very important part of a baby shower. Not only is it tradition, but it is a nice gift to offer your guests. There are many different ways you can choose to approach cake design, and we hope this page gives you some ideas and really jump-starts the endless ways you can do it. Whether you make it yourself or buy it, the ideas are endless.
First, let’s start by saying that you don’t actually have to have a CAKE. Nobody says that it actually has to be the traditional sheet cake with chocolate or vanilla frosting. Why not try the muffins? Seems like they’re all the rage lately.
There are many different things that you can do with cupcakes. Decorating them individually could be really fun (and really cute), or you could stack them to look like a central tower.
One idea I really like in particular is making a pull-apart cupcake cake. It’s easy to do: just place cupcake liners in a shaped cake pan (that’s the key: the cake pan needs to be shaped, otherwise they’ll look like a bunch of cupcakes squashed together) and pour in the batter. directly into the liners Cupcakes will bake and naturally form the shape of the pan. The frosting and decorations make this type of baby shower “cake” really stand out. Serving is a piece of cake (ha, no pun intended!) because your guests only have to “take apart” their piece.
Another cute idea for baby shower cakes is to fill the cake (or cupcake) with frosting, but depending on whether the mother is having a girl or a boy, the color/flavor of the frosting can be determined. For example, if the baby is going to be a boy, she fills the cake with blue icing and pink if she is having a girl. It’s the little things that make the difference.
Quirky or simple: homemade or store bought?
This can really go any way you want. You can get really fancy with the cake or you can decide to keep it simple. Remember it’s not a wedding, so it doesn’t have to be over the top (unless you want it to be, which is fine in which case). There is absolutely nothing wrong with getting the traditional sheet cake.
Whether you make the cake or have it made by a bakery, the most important thing is to make sure there is enough cake for all the guests. There is no right or wrong way to do it. The main “dish” of the shower is meant to be the gifts that the mother-to-be will receive. That’s the whole reason to have the shower in the first place!
One thing worth mentioning is that it’s good to stick to one theme. Does your cake need to completely match the decorations? No, not quite. But if you have blue and yellow decorations, it’s a nice touch to have blue and yellow on the cake.
