Such Good Boys is the true crime story of a 20-year-old college student who suffered verbal and psychological abuse from his emotionally disturbed mother. On the night of January 14, 2003, this same university student, with the help of his younger brother who was also abused but to a lesser extent, strangled this mother. To prevent authorities from identifying her body, she cut off her head and hands.
This book will make you believe in the saying “you reap what you sow” and as a mother, this book has put in my mind some more questions and concerns about whether I am raising my children properly. This is what I love about true crime. books. Because the stories are true-life stories, true crime books provide insight into what can go wrong, what you can do to avoid certain situations, and much more. True crime authors have to be especially gifted to write these climactic books. of a true crime story has already happened. Before you start reading, you know who murdered whom. These true crime authors don’t have the advantage of keeping their readers enthralled with the prospect of finding out what happens at the end. really talented to keep you reading and most of them are in my opinion, but not everyone can become a true crime writer.
Tina Dirmann tells this story exactly as it is. It is simple and objective and I personally love this style of writing. This book begins with a very brief chapter on how the body is discovered and then goes back in time to detail the events in the lives of the two boys until their mother is finally murdered.
I don’t believe in the physical punishment of children, so I absolutely detest any form of child abuse, which is why I couldn’t muster any sympathy for the murder victim.
I think the neighbors and friends should have done more. A little bit of interference could have gone a long way in changing the outcome of this story. Many people are reluctant to report abuse because they feel they are becoming involved in matters that are internal and private to another family. As a mother I would like my neighbors to report any abuse they see in my home. What if I have a mental illness and can’t see what I’m doing wrong? As a mother I would like my children’s needs to come first and for them to be protected. The murder victim was definitely suffering from some sort of mental breakdown and in that state of mind she was unable to distinguish between right and wrong. People close to the family should have done something.
To sum up the book, it is well written and any mother will feel an emotional tug on her heart reading this book. You will be faced once again with the enormous responsibilities that are placed upon us once we become parents and hopefully in most cases we can congratulate ourselves for maybe not a perfect job in raising our children but in the fact that we are doing our best and hopefully this best is good enough for our children.
