Although many of the BiOrb tanks are made to sit directly on top of your existing furniture, it is often a good idea to consider the total weight of your fish tank before purchasing. Aquariums filled with water, decorations and fish are just heavy.
However, not all furniture is built to withstand the load of a full aquarium. Fish tank stands offer an alternative to fish tanks placed directly on furniture.
But how can you calculate the weight of your aquarium before you buy it?
The rule of thumb is to add 8 pounds for every gallon of water plus the dry weight of your fish tank and decorations. So if you buy a 16 gallon BiOrb 60 tank and are trying to figure out if your old Ikea dresser can handle the weight, multiply the 16 gallons by 8 and then add the dry weight of your aquarium and decorations. Let’s assume your BiOrb tank and decorations weigh 25 dry pounds. The calculation would be like this:
16 gallons X 8 pounds = 128 pounds + 25 pounds = 153 pounds
That’s right… 153 pounds! That’s a lot of weight. Either you need a very sturdy piece of furniture to support the load, or you need to look into a fish tank stand.
BiOrb Fish Tank Stand
BiOrb manufactures a stand built specifically to support the weight of any BiOrb or BiUbe tank. And the good news is that the stand lives up to the design standards of its aquarium cousins.
The aquarium stand features a full cylindrical construction with two rear compartments that can hide electrical cables so as not to detract from the overall design.
The tank stand is designed to support any BiOrb or BiUbe aquarium. Mounting and setup are easy. BiOrb uses only six screws to hold the aquarium stand together, though the stand ends up being extremely sturdy. An included screwdriver comes with the BiOrb tank mount in case you’ve forgotten where you left yours.
There are a number of other fish tank stand options, but if you’re a BiOrb or BiUbe fan, you’ll want to check out the BiOrb Aquarium Stand. For many BiOrb owners, design is as important as all other aspects of fish keeping. Therefore, an aquarium stand that maintains the aesthetics of the design is important.
Aquarium Stand Safety
Another issue to consider when purchasing a fish tank stand is earthquake safety. If you live in an area that experiences frequent tremors, the BiOrb pedestal-style mount might not be the right choice for you. In this case, you’ll want to look for a fish tank stand or other piece of furniture that is sturdy enough to support the weight of the aquarium while also providing a surface area on which you can ensure earthquake safety.
In most cases, earthquake straps that secure to the tank, aquarium base, or furniture and wall are the best way to make sure the tank stays in one place when an earthquake strikes.
