European fashion shows are over and major designer brands have shown their latest collections, but what have been the standout themes this year and what is likely to be in high street menswear stores for the spring season? and summer 2018?
Top designer brands like Armani Jeans, Billionaire Boys Club, Kenzo and Stone Island are stocking their shelves with the latest fashions right now, so here’s a look at what you can expect to be trending in menswear at spring and summer 2018. .
The 80s are back in fashion
The decade some would rather forget is going to be a big influence on menswear this year and that means faded jeans with frayed cuffs, pastel colors and square-shouldered jackets will make a comeback. Believe it or not, there were also some ironed wrinkles on jeans at fashion shows!
Shorts
Shorts aren’t every man’s idea of the perfect formal wear, and it’s fair to say that opinion has always been divided on men wearing shorts anywhere outside of the gym or a sports field. This year, however, sleek, slim-fitting shorts were featured in many of the designer’s collections.
Vertical stripes will be large
Vertical stripes appeared on many of this year’s runways, so expect to add some striped numbers to your wardrobe next season. In fact, stripes could be on just about anything this summer, including t-shirts, joggers, suits, and dressy short-sleeved shirts.
Tonal color matching
Many of the outfits worn on the runways combined tonal colors to great effect. In other words, complementary shades from head to toe. This year there will be no throwing away the first thing out of the wardrobe, because all the boys will be wearing matching outfits this summer.
Printed shirts
Graphic prints were also very much in evidence at the shows, especially the prints on the t-shirts. Louis Viton specialized in tropical prints this year, while you can find some very eye-catching graphics on t-shirts in stores right now from designer brands like Kenzo and Billionaire Boys Club.
black and white are back
One of the big trends in menswear for the SS18 season will be dressing all in white. The opposite was also evident in European fashion shows with a lot of black as well. The two rarely mixed though, so we’re not going back to the two-tone look just yet!
Olives and green moss
And finally, to match a plethora of camouflage patterns, there was a clear trend towards colors with a military feel, such as khaki, beige and moss greens. Fortunately, brands like Stone Island already have a good selection of coats, shirts and pants in these shades, so you won’t have any trouble following this particular SS18 menswear trend.
