Peñíscola is located in the province of Castello on the Costa del Azahar (Azahar Coast) along the eastern Mediterranean coast of Spain. The Costa del Azhar is just north of the Costa Blanca.
Often referred to as ‘Valencia’s Gibraltar’, Peñíscola is a fortified seaport built on a rocky promontory that reaches a height of about 220 feet. The town itself is built around a medieval castle that was the setting for the movie El Cid, which starred the late great Charlton Heston.
The ‘old town’ of Peñíscola is surrounded by a large defensive wall with two gates, the Puerta de San Pedro and the Puerta de Fosch. The entrance to the old town is only through these gates. Once in town, you will marvel at the old whitewashed houses that line the maze of small winding roads.
The modern part of Peñíscola is a very popular holiday destination with many good hotels, beautiful beaches, the warm Mediterranean Sea, a marina and many restaurants and bars.
The main beach here is to the north and is about 3 miles long and about a quarter mile wide and has both sandy and rocky areas.
There are small beaches (coves) to the south that are popular with divers and snorkelers.
Peñíscola has a good climate all year round with lots of sun and very little rain. Summers here are very long and hot, while winters are extremely mild.
Spending a family holiday in Peñíscola means that ‘the old’ mixes with the ‘new’ and there is something to make everyone happy.
