Greece has no shortage of beautiful islands, but the island of Crete is one of the most culturally rich in the nation. Crete is also the largest and most populous island in Greece. More than two million people each year visit the island; this makes it one of the most popular destinations in the country. With thriving cities and beautiful landscapes, Crete is one of the most enchanting places in the world to vacation.
Beaches
Romantic and unspoiled, the beaches of Crete are among the most attractive features of the island. Since the island has approximately a thousand kilometers of coastline, tourists will easily find a stretch of sand along the Mediterranean that suits their needs. Several coves, bays and peninsulas also show the scenic beauty of the island. The north shore beaches tend to be more populated and are known to cater to tourists, but the south shore beaches promise laid-back charm and are just as alluring for their unspoiled charms.
Touristic centres
Given that Crete is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe, it is no surprise that there are a wide variety of resorts to accommodate visitors to the island. Resorts, particularly coastal ones, can be found near the most famous beaches on the island. Some offer relaxing and luxurious accommodation, while others promise a vibrant nightlife and plethora of activities. Elounda, Malia, Agia Galini and Ierapetra are some of the most popular resorts in Crete.
Scenery
Apart from its beaches, Crete also boasts many other scenic attractions. Gorges, rivers, lakes and mountains provide spectacular views and photo opportunities. The Lefka Ori mountains are popular for their history and two deep caves. Many of the gorges on the island, such as the Samaria Gorge, are well known and major tourist attractions. There are also smaller outlying islands that also offer scenic attractions.
Heraklion
The capital of Crete, Heraklion, offers vacationers plenty of urban diversions: excellent restaurants, taverns, and clubs can be found throughout the city. There are also many cultural attractions located in the city, such as the Venetian walls, a cathedral, and several museums. The city also has a variety of hotels and resorts to suit all types of travelers and their accommodation needs.
towns and villages
Visiting the smaller communities on the island is a delightful way to deepen your understanding of local customs, cuisine and history. Quaint fishing villages dot the coastline. Other towns are known for their specific attractions; for example, Chania was once a Venetian port and offers many examples of influential Venetian architecture. The small towns show the timeless appeal of island life.
Culture
Since the island was home to one of Europe’s oldest civilizations, the Minoans, it’s no surprise that Crete boasts a rich culture filled with traditional music and dance. With its own Greek dialect, Crete also has its own distinctive poetry known as Mantinades poetry. The local people also continue to follow many traditional Cretan customs and can usually be seen in traditional dress.
Archaeological sites
With such a long history, Crete contains a large number of important archaeological remains. The Minoan sites of Knossos and Phaistos are perhaps two of the most important attractions on the island. Scholars and tourists visit these sites throughout the year. However, there are many ruins from other important eras, such as Roman and Ottoman.
museums
Crete has a fantastic range of culturally important museums. One of its most popular museums is the Heraklion Archaeological Museum which is full of relics from the Minoan period. The Natural History Museum of Crete is also a popular tourist destination. In addition to its museums, the island has a world-class aquarium in the capital that attracts thousands of people annually.
food
Crete is famous for its fresh food and traditional dishes. Fresh fish and squid are readily available. Olives and fresh herbs accompany many meals. Seasonal fruits and vegetables are available in markets, as well as in restaurants and cafes. The island’s favorite wine and hard liquor, Raki, are also hallmarks of the island dining experience. Cretan cheeses are also popular with tourists who can try them in the markets. Most meals are known for their simple sauces made from fresh, locally produced ingredients.
Activities
Visitors to Crete will find plenty of exciting things to do. Tours are popular with visitors; there are bike tours and cultural tours that trace the long history of the island. Many of the island’s towns and cities are known for their vibrant nightlife; listening to live music and dancing are popular activities throughout the island. Hiking, boating, and sightseeing are also favorite activities on the island.
With so much to see and do in Crete, it’s no wonder it’s a leading holiday destination in Europe. Although part of Greece, the island has its own culture that is historically significant, but also charming today. For a Mediterranean vacation that has it all, Crete is a vacationer’s paradise.
